Flashing, as in photography, of course! Chris bought me a great new camera for Christmas and I have been eagerly awaiting the chance to learn how to use it at some of our favourite fishing spots. Today the three of us headed for the Gold River, long before the crack of dawn. We have never had much luck on this River but the stunning scenery, remote locations and third-party tales of beautiful Steelhead keep us returning year after year. The day was a chilly -5. The frosty trees and occasional sunny breaks gave me some great opportunities to see what the camera could do. We tried 5 different spots on the River and although I wet my hook at each one, I was a little more focused on the camera this trip. The boys valiantly threw combinations of gooey bobs, artificial worms, trout beads and some special Chris-concoctions, but alas the fish won out this time. So, instead of pictures of beautiful fish, I give you pictures of the beautiful surroundings and my fishing buddies.</div>

I recently began making home made gnocchi and these little potato dumpling go so well with prawns, and of course prawns go so well with butter. A perfectly heavenly dish. <div><br></div><div>Making gnocchi is a little time consuming, but the process is pretty simple. I find that using left over mashed potatoes that have been refrigerated for at least 24 hours is the best. They are nice and dry, but flavoured well. Put 1/2 cup of flour on the counter, next add 2 cups mashed potato and make a well in the centre. Crack an egg into the well and then add 1/2 cup flour. This section of the river closes January 1st so we wanted to give it one last try. No steelhead today but a few Coho were caught and Chris caught a nice little Cutthroat Trout. The day started out sunny and clear as we cruised the upper portion of the river. We tried a number of spots but finding the elusive steelhead among the thousands of Springs was no easy task. I hooked into a few old boys, and one of these hookups ended in a dramatic comedy of errors that is typical of a day on the river for Chris and I. There was a rod overboard, a rod rescue, the release of a monster Spring! And a sudden torrential downpour within minutes. All this was accomplished with the good humour and nerves of steel of our guide. <br />Shortly after this episode Chris quickly hooked up one monster steelhead and then another. It was his lucky day as both were Hatchery males! We played a few other Steelies that day but these two beauties were the only ones landed.<br /><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=ac203276c281d2ff39d5be4afa70d231.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/ac203276c281d2ff39d5be4afa70d231.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=14106067145d57a51532a4bbc282fd82.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/14106067145d57a51532a4bbc282fd82.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=f11b80d7a8b2f62e10e6f120a6f873c9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/f11b80d7a8b2f62e10e6f120a6f873c9.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=a43c0cd47d49bae2c5abb20241693b51.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/a43c0cd47d49bae2c5abb20241693b51.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br />To save face I will add a picture of my first Coho, caught a couple of weeks ago (on a day Chris was skunked). Their mission was to catch some Coho and Chinooks by jigging off the boat. I have not had a full account of the trip but tonight the picture messages of success came fast and furious to my phone. Looks like a memorable trip for sure!<br />Even though the goal was salmon, the pictures show that bottom fish were also plentiful.<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/14/4131.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/14/s_4131.jpg' border='0' width='210' height='281' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/14/4132.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/14/s_4132.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/14/4133.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/14/s_4133.jpg' border='0' width='210' height='281' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Monster Ling Cod<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/14/4134.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/14/s_4134.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Shark!!!!<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/14/4135.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/14/s_4135.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Coho<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/14/4136.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/14/s_4136.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/14/4137.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/14/s_4137.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Dream Chinook<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/14/4138.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/14/s_4138.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br /><br />- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone<br /><br />Christy Hartmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01330989252615028027noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427768076256910453.post-60234874646868954192012-08-13T10:31:00.001-07:002012-08-13T11:18:18.442-07:00Sharing the LoveMy adventure loving 13 year old niece Emily is staying with me for a few days. We decided it was a perfect opportunity to introduce her to fishing. So Auntie and Niece headed to a river where the Pink Salmon were running and we had a blast. It only took Em about 10 casts to become an expert at controlling her line and landing in the 'sweet spot'. With 30 minutes she had landed her first fish, a nice 4lb salmon all on her own. The old timer next to her said he had been there all day without landing any. We were only going to catch and release so she kindly gave him her fish (after snapping the first fish picture). We stayed at the river for about three hours and were by far the most successful fisher women (or men) for the day. I landed about a dozen and Emily caught another three!! It was so great to share something I love doing with her!<br /><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWYU2e-tq0LlN8Noqm2BPWJGPyNg_AUYo3M8HjIft-FUpkq7zq4D_sCR1C3Df3f8KKqzTepnfJ44sEzXcJoS4Mt8cySHUmHeuRiCU5d9ahcmGVUPTOgaOZrCE-3b4ViV95vUtuylaYuEtH/s640/blogger-image--2075533100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWYU2e-tq0LlN8Noqm2BPWJGPyNg_AUYo3M8HjIft-FUpkq7zq4D_sCR1C3Df3f8KKqzTepnfJ44sEzXcJoS4Mt8cySHUmHeuRiCU5d9ahcmGVUPTOgaOZrCE-3b4ViV95vUtuylaYuEtH/s640/blogger-image--2075533100.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIaz9BV52Ol0N40FSd0a2MFCHl5_1fWnSjrXGOWCOaMODz_Oul0jAXmz3JkznVIxdLluBQ6IiU8kVzhbM6SSFDH6Wwqx6-OKXWlJf_nagedXZcV6tVqyd-_9sDWMBfM_q09i5cEofLJy8Z/s640/blogger-image--1026162316.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIaz9BV52Ol0N40FSd0a2MFCHl5_1fWnSjrXGOWCOaMODz_Oul0jAXmz3JkznVIxdLluBQ6IiU8kVzhbM6SSFDH6Wwqx6-OKXWlJf_nagedXZcV6tVqyd-_9sDWMBfM_q09i5cEofLJy8Z/s640/blogger-image--1026162316.jpg" /></a></div><br /><br />Here is a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4jPFz27O6M&feature=youtube_gdata_player">video</a> of Emily in action!<br />Christy Hartmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01330989252615028027noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427768076256910453.post-20009328315150529682012-05-09T07:52:00.000-07:002012-05-09T08:09:36.356-07:00Sweet Chili PrawnsSpring is in full swing on Vancouver Island. Yesterday I was doing some yard work and Chris was ripping out the old wooden boat seats to install some new ones we bought last week. It seemed like a great evening to fire up the BBQ and Surf & Turf was on the menu. I decided to make some Sweet Chili Grilled Prawns.<br /><br />Marinade:<br />1/2 cup sweet chili sauce - I bought this one at an Asian market and though it is meant for chicken it is the same as regular sweet chili sauce from the grocery store.<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/05/09/1154.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/05/09/s_1154.jpg' border='0' width='380' height='280' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />The juice of one lime<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/05/09/1155.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/05/09/s_1155.jpg' border='0' width='380' height='280' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />1 tbsp of soy sauce<br />1 tbsp sesame oil<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/05/09/1156.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/05/09/s_1156.jpg' border='0' width='380' height='280' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Marinate the prawns for 15-30 minutes. Do not leave them longer than that or the lime juice will begin to cook the prawns.<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/05/09/1157.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/05/09/s_1157.jpg' border='0' width='380' height='280' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Grill on skewers for 2-3 minutes on each side (depending on how hot your BBQ is).<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/05/09/1158.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/05/09/s_1158.jpg' border='0' width='380' height='280' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />These sweet and spicy prawns were an excellent companion for a delicious steak! Once again work called me out of town last week and I kept busy dreaming of new recipes. Tonight I made a prawn and corn bisque that was delicate and delicious. Bisque is a great way to really enjoy the flavor of the prawn, it is important to give the shells the time needed to make a rich stock. I used onions and leeks out of our back yard garden as well as apple juice that we pressed and canned ourselves last fall. I love knowing the ingredients are fresh and from our own hands.<br />Ingredients<br />2 pounds unpeeled prawns<br />2 cups of frozen corn <br />2 tsp oil<br />1 medium onion<br />2 leeks<br />5 cups water<br />2 bay leaves<br />fresh thyme sprigs<br />2tablespoon butter <br />2 tablespoons tomato paste<br />1/4 cup apple cider<br />3 tablespoons all-purpose flour<br />2 teaspoons salt<br />1/2 teaspoon white pepper<br />1 cup half-and-half<br />Peel and devein the prawns. Reserve the shells for the stock. Coarsely chop prawns, cover and chill. Coarsely chop the onion and leeks.<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/05/05/3756.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/05/05/s_3756.jpg' border='0' width='380' height='280' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br />Heat oil in a Dutch oven on medium heat. Add onions, leeks and shells. Cook for 4 minutes stirring frequently. Add water, bay leaves and thyme. Bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer covered for 3o minutes.<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/05/05/3805.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/05/05/s_3805.jpg' border='0' width='380' height='280' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br />Drain the stock into a colander over a bowl. Discard shells and veg.<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/05/05/3806.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/05/05/s_3806.jpg' border='0' width='380' height='280' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br />Melt butter in dutch oven medium heat. Add corn kernels; cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Add tomato paste; cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently. We heartbreakingly lost our beloved Border Collie Puppet at the end of November. She was a water lover so we could not bring her to the river when we fished as she would splash around and dive right in whenever possible. I still miss her every day.<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=43d8615d.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/43d8615d.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br />We were not sure if we were ready to get another dog but as soon as we saw a picture of a scared handsome boxer/lab at the SPCA I just had to go meet him. 10 minutes later I knew he would be coming home with us. In a last ditch effort to fill our freezer with prawns for the next 8 months we declared this past weekend Prawnapalooza 2012. I drove up to Port Alice and we spent our days pulling and dropping our traps to try and catch our limit.<br />
<br />
<br />
This was my first time participating in pawning and Chris was excited to teach me all about this passion of his. I am generally not a boat lover because I get seasick in even the smallest waves, but I really enjoyed myself. <br />
<a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view&current=e244f715.jpg" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" border="0" src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/e244f715.jpg" /></a><br />
It was like our own little 'Deadliest Catch' episode as we watched each pot being pulled up, anticipating how many prawns it would hold.<br />
<a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view&current=45fc5934.jpg" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" border="0" src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/45fc5934.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
We bought an <a href="http://www.acelinehauler.com/" target="_blank">Ace Line Hauler</a> last year, it was a hotly contested purchase in our house as it was not cheap and I thought my manly husband should just keep pulling the 300feet of rope by hand. Now that I have been out there I can see how much easier the hauler makes things, money well spent! I don't admit to being wrong often so I hope he appreciates my public admission.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view&current=20f41196.jpg" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" border="0" src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/20f41196.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Chris has his system down pat but I tried to help a little. I tossed and gaffed the buoys, I emptied a couple of traps, I headed some prawns and I kept him entertained with my witty charm and prawn jokes.<br />
<br />

<span style="color: #4c1130;">The Prawn And The Cod</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #4c1130;">One day, in the shark-infested waters of the Caribbean, two prawns called Justin and Christian are discussing the pressures of being a preyed upon prawn.</span><br />
<br /><span style="color: #4c1130;">"I hate being a prawn," says Justin. "I wish I were a shark."</span><br />
<br /><span style="color: #4c1130;">Suddenly, a mysterious cod appears. "Your wish is granted," he says.</span><br />
<br /><span style="color: #4c1130;">Instantly, Justin becomes a shark. Horrified, Christian swims away, afraid his former friend might eat him. As time passes, Christian continues to avoid Justin, leaving the shrimp-turned-maneater lonely and frustrated. So when he bumps into the cod again, he begs the mysterious fish to change him back. Lo and behold, Justin is turned back into a prawn.</span><br />
<br /><span style="color: #4c1130;">With tears of joy in his tiny little eyes, he swims back to the reef to seek out Christian.</span><br />
<br /><span style="color: #4c1130;">As he approaches, he shouts out: "It's me, Justin, your old friend. I've changed & I've found Cod. I'm a prawn again, Christian."</span><br />
<br />
<a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view&current=b5bdfdb7.jpg" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" border="0" src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/b5bdfdb7.jpg" /></a><br />

<br />
Along with a decent number of prawns we also pulled up a few other sea creatures including crabs, squat lobsters and quill back fish.<br />
<br />

<br />
The weekend was successful for filling our freezer but also for the two of us to take a break from our busy lives and spend some time together in the beauty and calm that can only be found on northern Vancouver Island.<br />

<br />I have been inspired by our fantastic weekend and am anxious to get into the kitchen and start creating some new recipes with my favourite seafood. New recipes coming soon!<br />

Chris has been having a lot of success with our prawn traps and as I was packaging the haul for the freezer I could not resist cooking up a few and experimenting in the kitchen. <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710651102010225938" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip_pwm9P5oTXlWGyfUNWkJzoz_BTQr4FsekZ0qA9fZo-u3eGsv7NToJ06ZpseQ5mlUihqQbd-P8cH6ZaLyiZVmO8yu96zxTibrMFRU2zKCQ532nRjtP4k6OPpno-ut4MmUOOTqJ8WTl1VO/s400/DSCN0412.JPG" border="0" /><br /><br />First I took some <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">wonton</span> wraps and placed them into muffin tins. A quick shot of cooking spray and then into a 350 degree oven for 5-7 minutes. Keep <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">checking</span> them, when the tips start to turn brown they are done. Remove the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">wontons</span> and allow them to cool and crisp up.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710651108219499362" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsSsIg8gD1fRsK3TN0kxLL02nyxCx3CNO9l5FCiEKRPYknNK-8t_IPR5lyFRYFMXgGD_PCPYFfhulcp4TCtbYQv9RHVZLunjC9gG0J9YoATdM8LGA70aAZSAOZECUwBcQUngFJclUiZRYS/s400/DSCN0416.JPG" border="0" /><br />Next I made a spicy coleslaw. Shredded cabbage and carrots combined with my secret dressing (I guess it will not be a secret anymore).<br /><br />1/2 cup <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">mayonnaise</span><br />2 tbsp vinegar<br />2 tbsp sugar<br />1 tsp salt<div><div>1/2-1 tsp <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">sriracha</span> hot chili sauce<br /><br />I simply cooked the prawns in boiling water for 2 minutes, <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">allowed</span> to cool and then roughly chopped. Chris had to work again and missed out on a couple of beauties! We left home at 5:30am and had our lines in the water by 7:15. Another angler wandered into the spot just after we did and he did not seem pleased when Kris and I each had a landed hatchery Steelie on shore within 30 minutes. His frustration was clear and he began to toss his line directly into the pool we had been drifting to. Of course this had the effect of spooking the fish and we spent the next hour and a half casting without another bite. Although there was not much action we were thrilled with the fish we caught and happy that the rain stayed away for the morning (and I must of course point out that my fish was MUCH bigger than the little fellow caught by the Jester).<br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708154567048660914" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhezub-X4fICBYxRa4Dt1seJ0Dc_yF4KMzmFrqBiPWAP0NRb81tX9YcI9w7vbEXCXxXCjAxS9jMJyi48keJL_XETNCW5nl2C2yZDf7XuTbTswhPcbT9Ei7QGg3_9gFZPXAzQeHm6TRt2IlI/s400/027.JPG" border="0" /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708154558358493234" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEqOUlqjzUOtDafwY1z6KRG-yWAyW-mvjQhqrSliqHq270cuEGjxdXxFJUdZPowUbrYnqh4kZpRTrEE99ynROyV7_GZes9DBxfgX7Jp5O0kPePnaNY1_1c5mW_el_EubPEDGaoEYGWqTU8/s400/016.JPG" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708154549095529714" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-BdS0lfj2YddlTcS8RuxHbZwGzSQpuHpwjHzaXR0DdLAG5cQRmee3-BZLdzKaTKT91QFxxoAVh40datSbmF7DlqM11Tg5UUz5pCWWtsR5k7ZTH7igMabR_LSk58bQqA-7BNRgChh8USDW/s400/031.JPG" border="0" /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708154536910115618" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUoUhyphenhyphenkl76v92yV0CwuwQ_oLOuPa03LH4kgoBPcoZbJOyv-i0etFSpS1mAYdiQqTaqEWZqgxIpAakVFDlMI1dVskSGOQFQxhcFDYfRmXK_BPV6cqEzUphg4jMegta5NHt3r8mqzYLtgsJa/s400/013.JPG" border="0" /><br /><br /><center><a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/02/11/3695.jpg"></a></center><br /><br /><center><a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/02/11/3663.jpg"></a></center><br /><br /><center><a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/02/11/3664.jpg"></a></center><br /><br /><center><a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/02/11/3665.jpg"></a></center><br /><br /><br /><center><a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/02/11/3666.jpg"></a></center></div></div></div></div>Christy Hartmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01330989252615028027noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427768076256910453.post-88202447450419531602012-02-10T21:48:00.000-08:002012-02-10T22:11:51.368-08:00Packing for Steelhead<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy25qTv_701MzU44HimT8H2MA3EmxpE_oISauP94u9PqoEKjp_inGsMRqubUCoi73TdXLzKyLd2_eFLz9lOjr_rirrfH0Vnv8q34vJIhMT_Gx5SzuPo_8RD3BUkq2omylj0Ekaoh6pXH5E/s1600/093.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy25qTv_701MzU44HimT8H2MA3EmxpE_oISauP94u9PqoEKjp_inGsMRqubUCoi73TdXLzKyLd2_eFLz9lOjr_rirrfH0Vnv8q34vJIhMT_Gx5SzuPo_8RD3BUkq2omylj0Ekaoh6pXH5E/s400/093.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707752703755134018" border="0" /></a><br />The Jester and I are heading to the river at the crack of dawn tomorrow morning so I am spending this evening getting my gear together. Chris bought me this little <a style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);" href="http://www.flyfishingoutfitters.com/sage/s/viewitem.aspx?p=tpa-sag-ches-000">Sage chest pack</a> for Christmas and it is the perfect size for an afternoon on the river. Of course I always have the backup of my fishing partners who bring enough extra tackle for a small village. Many of our favourite <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">fishing</span> spots are slippery, rocky and almost always wet. I love that I can access all of my essential gear without having to move once I am in the perfect casting position.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8sEcXqIQUkbc-MpACzrdZcLAEe6NyadtlvamOgCq8Ok8V6wmi9GNYRUDnTCP7GoglMEpjmBZLohY9v6UXt8nV1ZFgx1eEMdWFg2_BgeRelR8_ROFHKiauXtGFpOkGw_y_w-8aseChJR-c/s1600/096.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8sEcXqIQUkbc-MpACzrdZcLAEe6NyadtlvamOgCq8Ok8V6wmi9GNYRUDnTCP7GoglMEpjmBZLohY9v6UXt8nV1ZFgx1eEMdWFg2_BgeRelR8_ROFHKiauXtGFpOkGw_y_w-8aseChJR-c/s400/096.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707752710344345202" border="0" /></a><br />A few trout beads, a couple different wool colours, the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">occasional</span> spinner, a handful of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">splitshot</span> and a smattering of swivels is all I need in my tiny tackle box. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcR0rXgt_TykojfZhY1bNFfOWnet9VzgDhH6LRNCfHr01YCK_192k3h4WFYVvGr2kKlm72j0uiaH8UVa0YmFk2XvEPZ6BlMEqxcU6qRe_jId4Ob7ahregG9LSJ7VvrtpQIZBvUeujxr_X0/s1600/106.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcR0rXgt_TykojfZhY1bNFfOWnet9VzgDhH6LRNCfHr01YCK_192k3h4WFYVvGr2kKlm72j0uiaH8UVa0YmFk2XvEPZ6BlMEqxcU6qRe_jId4Ob7ahregG9LSJ7VvrtpQIZBvUeujxr_X0/s400/106.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707752720538947522" border="0" /></a><br /><br />I will shamefully confess that I do not tie up my own leaders. Chris has always just handed me pips boxes or foam boards with beautifully tied hooks. I have attempted this egg loop knot a few times but never mastered the technique. In exchange I always ensure that I pack us a delicious and <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">nutritious</span> lunch, this arrangement seems to suit him fine. Tomorrow I will be using both classic steel and hot pink hooks. Floats, pliers and the ever important combo clippers round out my gear. We lived there for seven years before coming to our senses and returning to the West Coast, but we left behind many friends who we miss dearly. Of course the vacation somehow had to involve our fishing obsession. We attended the Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition. Chris and I had a great time looking at the booths and demonstrations. It was a great way to compare all the different tackle in one place.<br /><br />Chris also attended a fly workshop at <a target="_blank" href="http://countrypleasuresff.blogspot.com/2011/12/special-event-april-vokey-intruder.html">Country Pleasures Fly Fishing</a> that was run by April Vokey from <a target="_blank" href="http://www.flygal.ca/blog">Fly Gal.</a><br /><br />The class was on Steelhead Intruders and Chris learned a lot, and produced this great fly.<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/02/11/2677.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/02/11/s_2677.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Between Vancouver and Calgary we managed to do damage at 10 different fishing shops and came home with lots of goodies. We are planning a Steelhead excursion for this upcoming weekend, so we will see if that Pink Intruder is a lucky one.<br />Christy Hartmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01330989252615028027noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427768076256910453.post-11673706953245824302012-01-18T10:22:00.000-08:002012-01-18T10:55:56.289-08:00And now back to our regularly scheduled programming...After our last hugely successful <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Steelheading</span> outing, we will now return to our usual type of post about unsuccessful winter fishing excursions. The three of us headed to Gold River yesterday to try our luck. The day was snowy and colder than normal. It does not dip below freezing very often during the day here but it was a brisk -6 most of our morning and afternoon on the river. We hit up 5 spots on our fishing <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">circuit</span> and did not see any fish (and only two other anglers braving the weather). Although I can not <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">regale</span> you with any exciting <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">fishtales</span> I will share the beauty of a cold Vancouver Island January day. We used the day to get in some practice on new (to us) casting techniques. The boys gave me some lessons with their <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">centerpins</span> (and I must say I did pretty well) and Chris broke out the new <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Spey</span> setup he got for Christmas. Despite the cold toes it was a good day!<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2tR9aFUxd4olrN4e9hBPc6PuPrqfxc6OmToChorEAb4CnepWYnWmkLIJgGJN7gBFeJmA1BIBf5msjXqchX8lHwC4N9e8SR3Z2ruAYoufQWd7bdje4FScwNced9j_Ueb1thMTYrjAjXbgK/s1600/240.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; We have fished the other side of this pool a few times but it is usually pretty crowded and you have to stand on a log in a line of other anglers, not my idea of a relaxing Steelhead day. The other side usually has only one or two people fishing and a decent sized rocky shore. A few people have tried to tell us how to get there but it is hard to describe an unmarked trail off an unmarked trail, and then straight down a trail that's not really a trail. So, with a vague idea of where we were going, Chris and I set out this morning with Puppet the Wonder Dog to see if we could find it. The day was absolutely gorgeous, a little above freezing and clear blue sky! We left the rods and waders at home, opting instead for hiking sticks and gumboots.<br /><br />Our first (and only) encounter with another person was with a nice man working at a gravel pit. He pointed us in the right direction but warned us that the Beavers had been busy and the trail was pretty waterlogged. Ten minutes later it was clear what he meant.<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=96c80f52.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/96c80f52.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=93bb11a0.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/93bb11a0.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><br />We slogged our way through and had a lot of fun trying to stay dry while Puppet splashed around us.<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=54691ded.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/54691ded.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=d7e815e4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/d7e815e4.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><br />Eventually the trail dried out and we fund ourselves on an old logging road. A few kilometers later we turned off when we could hear the river. The trail went down... And down... And down and became narrower and muddier with every step. When we finally emerged where we could see the river we realized that we were about a KM downstream from our destination. There was no choice but to climb back up. Even the dog was not impressed with this situation, and abandoned Chris, hoping I knew an easier way out.<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=c0c3c83d.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/c0c3c83d.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=c341f0c8.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/c341f0c8.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=f88ba992.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/f88ba992.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br />After a little more hunting and hiking we found another trail down. This one was even steeper and involved a limbo trick under a log that my 6'4" husband did not navigate gracefully. When we finally made it to the bottom we were excited and relieved to find ourselves exactly where we wanted to be. We watched a few fish being caught and then hiked back up.<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=029b0597.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/029b0597.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=58979ff7.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/58979ff7.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=51e84083.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/51e84083.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br /><br />At the end of the day we had covered about 10km of trail and bush in four hours and were exhausted! I think it would take us 45-60 minutes to go straight to the fishing hole so this will definitely be a destination for a full day fishing trip in the future.<br /><br /><br /><br />Christy Hartmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01330989252615028027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7427768076256910453.post-19288329936766114072012-01-10T00:05:00.001-08:002012-01-13T19:35:47.157-08:00Steelhead Fly SwapSome members of the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.sportfishingbc.com/forum/showthread.php?17972-Fly-swap&p=212290#post212290">Sportfishingbc.com forum</a> are having a fly swap for Steelhead flies. I would really really like one of these:
<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/01/06/3178.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/01/06/s_3178.jpg' border='0' width='350' height='350' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />But I would really really like it to be in this colour:
<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/01/06/3179.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/01/06/s_3179.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='266' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />My goal for 2012 is to master fishing with a centerpin. My fishing partners both used one of these in the last year and rave about the action.. I need to keep up with the Jones's! I have been using my Shimano Curado 200E7 for the past year and I love it. It is smooth, easy to handle and has never let me down. I love that it is low profile but is strong enough and holds enough line for the kind of large salmon we go after. It will always be my 'go to' reel but I am ready for a new challenge.
<br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/01/06/3180.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/01/06/s_3180.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />I wonder which of the boys is going to let me practice on their precious Islander?

We have been trying hard again this winter to track down the elusive silver tricksters. Chris finally caught his first one with a local guide on the Stamp River using a drift boat. He will post that story and pictures soon. I have even prepared a post full of beautiful pictures of all the places I have failed to catch <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Steelhead</span> but have been unable to make myself hit the publish button.<br /><br />Chris had to work yesterday but the Jester and I found ourselves free of family and job obligations on New Years Day so we made a plan to head to the river. We got a later than usual start and did not make it to the water until 9:30. The drive to Port <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Alberni</span> was filled with conversation about how low our expectations were for the day. The cruel world of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Steelhead</span> had finally begun to crush out spirits, I could not even muster the usual comments about how just being out there is enough.<br /><br />The 30 minute hike to the top secret fishing hole was cold, snowy, slippery and soggy. For the first time ever on a fishing trip I found myself daydreaming of the warm bed I had left behind. We reached the shore and I quickly snapped my shiny blue <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Loomis</span> together and scrambled to the prime spot. I learned a long time ago to prepare my gear at home so I could beat the boys to the water while they are tying their lines.<br /><br />My first cast was a test of my weight, tension and the drift of the river. The water level had risen significantly since we were there the previous week. Cast number two was a perfect arc into the white water and a long drift to the pool of swirling water which we had been told occasionally plays host to some resting Steelies. 1...2...3... FISH ON!!! The bite of a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Steelhead</span> is unlike any other fish I have played. There was no tentative nibble, he bit strong and then began to run. I whooped with joy, the Jester dropped his half tied line and grabbed the camera to snap this shot.<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=0fedb024.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/0fedb024.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br />I played the fish for about fifteen minutes. He was a big silver beauty with the tell tale red streaks of a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Steelhead</span>. I began to slowly back up onto the rock shore to bring him closer to the Jester's waiting hands. As he rose to the surface in front of us we could see that he was a wild <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Steelhead</span> (the hatchery removes the adipose fin before releasing them and these are the only ones available for retention on this river) so we knew we would be releasing him. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">Steelhead</span> rub their faces on the rocks to try and get free from the hook. We did not want to hurt this beautiful fish so the Jester reached for the line to pull him onto the flat rocks. At that moment to hook slipped out, the fish flashed me a smile and he shot back into the fast water like a silver bullet.<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=d35db0d8.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/d35db0d8.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><br />I was sad that I did not get a picture with my first <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">Steelhead</span> but l have a great video of the fight that I will edit and post soon.<br /><br />After a quick high five my line was once again drifting down the river and three casts later... FISH ON!!! Another wild one with a fantastic fight.<br /><br />The Jester got in on the action as well and his second fish was a beautiful 8lb hatchery male that we wanted to bring home for dinner. My 28 year old grizzly buddy turned into a little boy.. The moment i snapped this picture he was shouting <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">Weeeeeeehoo</span>!!<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=6ca5b0ad.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/6ca5b0ad.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br />He was fighting hard and I knew it would take awhile so I tossed my line in again and FISH ON!!! So we had a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">Steelhead</span> Doubleheader! I'm sure our whooping could be heard by the bears hibernating nearby. Kris landed his fish and the smile on his face says it all.<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=748f6f59.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/748f6f59.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=418b07c0.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/418b07c0.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br />The action was strong for about two hours and we loved every cold, wet second of it. Now I understand why people get hooked on this, those two hours immediately made the hundred of unsuccessful hours worth it!<br /><a href="http://s1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/?action=view¤t=63f24c8d.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s511/pinkwaders/63f24c8d.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a><br />Christy Hartmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01330989252615028027noreply@blogger.com6
